The University of Szeged and Mediso Medical Imaging Systems Ltd., Hungary’s leading medical technology research and development company with an international presence, have signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
The partnership aims to generate new research and development achievements in the field of nuclear medicine and theranostics, building on the scientific and clinical competencies of the university and the world-class imaging technologies of Mediso Ltd., promoting the development of personalized patient care.
The agreement, signed on July 6, 2026, provides a comprehensive framework for joint research, innovation developments and educational cooperation. The parties aim to work together on the development of technologies that improve diagnostic accuracy, support therapeutic decisions and contribute to patients receiving personalized care faster and more efficiently.
The key areas of cooperation include basic and applied research in nuclear medicine and theranostics, the investigation of the neuro-oncological application of the patented multi-pinhole collimator technology, the development of theranostic and dosimetry solutions, and the clinical utilization of artificial intelligence-supported image processing and diagnostic systems.
The partnership also creates new opportunities in education. Mediso Ltd. will be involved in the training through professional visits and support for student projects, while the Institute of Nuclear Medicine of the University of Szeged will serve as the Reference Nuclear Medicine Center for the company's high-tech systems. The center supports both industrial and academic knowledge transfer as a research, education and demonstration base.
At the signing of the agreement, the Rector of the University of Szeged, Prof. Dr. László Rovó, emphasized that the university's strategic goal is to connect scientific excellence with innovation serving patient care.
– At the University of Szeged, we are building our strategy on a unique legacy. Albert Szent-Györgyi’s legacy still obliges us to see the ultimate goal of science in the service of the human. Today’s agreement embodies exactly this approach: it combines scientific excellence with technological innovation – he said.
He also highlighted that Mediso Ltd.’s world-class technologies and the clinical experience of the University of Szeged can together result in developments that provide patients with more accurate diagnoses, more effective therapeutic decisions and better chances of recovery.
– The cooperation fits well into the university’s innovation ecosystem, in which research results can quickly reach practical application – emphasized Dr. Judit Fendler, Chancellor of University of Szeged.
– Thanks to the developments of recent years, a system has been created at the University of Szeged in which research, innovation and partnerships with economic actors reinforce each other. The Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation Excellence Center of SZTE is a defining element of this approach, and the agreement concluded with Mediso Ltd. is a strategically important connection point in this network. This partnership simultaneously serves the development of science, healthcare innovation and the interests of patients – he added.
– Mediso Ltd. builds innovative technology, and the University of Szeged adds the innovation that is not visible in the engineering lab, the real clinical practice – drew attention to Dr. Zsuzsanna Besenyi, head of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Theranostics Center of SZTE SZAKK.
She added: the Institute of Nuclear Medicine of SZTE is the first theranostics center in Hungary, which simultaneously represents professional excellence and responsibility towards patients, future professionals and innovation.
– Almost the entire vertical of theranostics is present at our university, from the cyclotron through preclinical developments to patient care. In this process, Mediso Ltd. is not simply a technology supplier, but a true innovation partner: we combine its world-class engineering knowledge with the clinical experience and research results of our university. This cooperation enables the most advanced imaging technologies to be put into service of research, education and, above all, patient care even faster, she said.
Mediso Ltd. is Hungary's leading, globally present medical technology R&D company, which plays a decisive role in the field of nuclear medicine and hybrid imaging. Its product portfolio ranges from gamma cameras developed for routine examinations, to three-detector SPECT/CT systems suitable for theranostic examinations at the highest level, to complex hybrid devices that uniquely integrate three modalities (SPECT/CT/PET). In addition, it offers innovative preclinical products serve the highest level of molecular imaging needs, including market-leading PET/CT and SPECT/CT devices, standalone MRI and integrated PET/MRI systems with 3T or 7T field strength.
István Bagaméry, CEO of Mediso Ltd., emphasized in his presentation: “the development of clinical and preclinical devices uniquely suited for theranostic applications is of paramount importance to us, and this can only be imagined with cooperating partners who cover the entire clinical development cycle, starting from radiotherapy markers, through preclinical and clinical studies to patient care. We are proud that the Theranostics Center of the University of Szeged will play a prominent role in our existing international cooperation partner network.”
