The new AnyScan® PET-CT of Semmelweis University, acquired in the framework of the VEKOP national grant, was handed over with a ceremonial ribbon cut. As a result of the development, it is possible to map such incurable diseases and their pathogenic factors, as aggressive cancer, cardiovascular and central nervous system disorders. The high-sensitivity and high-resolution imaging equipment enables functional imaging and, as a result of a collaboration agreement with Mediso, it was also upgraded with a three-detector SPECT subsystem making it a triple modality device only available on the market by Mediso.

“The development project is an outstanding example of translational research with results that can be used directly next to the patient bed”, Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University commented at the ceremony organized in a narrow circle due to the epidemic situation. Thanks to the device's combination of three different imaging technologies, SPECT/PET/CT, the most complex scientific questions can be answered, as well as the function and the smallest details, allowing the translation of new therapeutic products and diagnostic procedures from preclinical trials all the way to human use.

“A more than 10 years old dream will come true, with this device installed in the translational research chain of Semmelweis University and the discipline of “From Molecule to Man” will be completed in terms of imaging”, said dr. Miklós Kellermayer, leader of the project, Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Radiobiology, Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine.

The grant enabled the procurement of the PET and CT subsystems and through a research and development collaboration agreement between the University and Mediso, a triple headed SPECT was also added. “The AnyScan® TRIO SPECT/CT/PET installed is a unique imaging solution where all three imaging modalities are integrated into one equipment. It is unique on the market that all three modalities are combined in this high-end imaging device and that the three SPECT detectors are complemented by a so-called Multi-PinHole collimator. With this technology, SPECT can also be achieve acquisition and image quality analogous to PET. The project is another example of the close partnership between Mediso and the Semmelweis University”, said Gergő Bagaméry, Director of Product Development of the company's preclinical business line.
